Pravana Neons vs Pastels vs Classic Vivids

Pravana VIVIDS live in three distinct tonal families: Neons, Pastels, and Classic VIVIDS. They all apply as direct dye with no developer, but they are not interchangeable. The base level you need, the saturation you get, and the wear time all differ. Here is the breakdown behind the chair.

Classic VIVIDS

The original VIVIDS line is what built the brand. Deep saturation, huge pigment load, and a shade range that covers rich jewel tones through moody blacks and reds. Classic VIVIDS deliver the most payoff and the longest wear of the three families.

Shade Examples

  • Magenta, Red, Wild Orchid
  • Violet, Blue, Green
  • Silver, Yellow, Clear

Base Level Required

Lift to level 8 to 9 for most shades. Violets and blues look best on level 9 or 10. Classic VIVIDS can go on level 7 but the result will lean dark and the tone shift will be limited.

Processing

Apply straight from the tube, process 30 minutes at room temperature, rinse cool.

Pravana Neons

The Neons line is engineered for maximum brightness under black light and in daylight. Fluorescent pinks, oranges, yellows, and greens that pop harder than the classics. The tradeoff is that Neons need the cleanest possible base to show off their glow.

Shade Examples

  • Neon Pink, Neon Orange
  • Neon Yellow, Neon Green

Base Level Required

Lift to level 10, pale yellow to almost white. Neons will not glow on level 9 or below. If the base is not clean enough, Neon Yellow especially will look muddy and green cast.

Processing

30 minutes at room temperature, no heat. Neons fade a bit faster than the Classics because of the lighter pigment load, so saturation at the bowl is non-negotiable.

Pravana Pastels

Pastels are soft, dreamy versions of the Classic palette. Think dusty lavender, pale blue, baby pink, mint. They are already diluted at the factory, so you can apply them straight from the tube and get a true pastel finish on pre-lightened hair.

Shade Examples

  • Too Cute Coral, Luscious Lavender
  • Blissful Blue, Mystical Mint
  • Pretty in Pink

Base Level Required

Lift to level 10, the lightest possible pale yellow to white. Any residual warmth will distort the pastel tone.

Processing

Apply straight from the tube, process 20 to 30 minutes at room temperature. Pastels can be watched closely since they saturate quickly on a clean, porous base.

When to Reach for Each

Pick Classic VIVIDS When

  • The client wants the most saturated, longest-lasting result
  • The base is level 8 or 9
  • You are creating a rich jewel tone or a deep fashion shade

Pick Neons When

  • The client wants maximum brightness and glow
  • The base is a clean level 10
  • Photo shoots, events, or high-impact content are the goal

Pick Pastels When

  • The client wants a soft, wearable fashion tone
  • The base is clean level 10
  • You do not want to dilute Classic VIVIDS with Clear

Custom Blends Across Families

You can mix within a family freely. You can also mix Classics with Pastels to deepen a pastel shade, or mix Neons with Classics to push brightness. Keep ratios consistent for retouches.

  • Deepen a Pastel: 3 parts Pastel to 1 part Classic in the same family
  • Soften a Classic: 1 part Classic to 3 parts Clear
  • Amp a Classic: 3 parts Classic to 1 part Neon

Aftercare for All Three

All three families live and die by aftercare. Sulfate-free shampoo, cool water, no hot tools over 350 degrees F, and no more than three washes per week. Pravana Color Protect is the baseline recommendation.

Common Mistakes by Family

Classic VIVIDS

  • Using on level 6 or 7 and expecting true tone, result will be murky
  • Diluting too much with Clear and losing saturation

Neons

  • Applying on a warm level 9 and expecting the glow, warmth will kill the fluorescence
  • Skipping the double process and relying on toner alone

Pastels

  • Applying to hair with residual brass, the pastel tone will shift cool or muddy
  • Over-processing, pastels grab quickly and can go too dark

Wear Time Realities

Set expectations at the consultation. Different families fade at different rates even with the same aftercare.

  • Classic VIVIDS: 4 to 8 weeks
  • Neons: 3 to 5 weeks
  • Pastels: 2 to 4 weeks

Frequently Asked Questions

How light does hair need to be for Pravana vivid color?

Most vivid and fashion colors require hair to be pre-lightened to level 9-10 (pale yellow to very pale yellow) for true-to-swatch results. Darker bases will alter the final color. Pravana fashion shades deposit directly with no developer needed, making them gentle on already-lightened hair.

How long does Pravana vivid color last?

Direct dye fashion colors typically last 4-20 washes depending on the shade, hair porosity, and aftercare. Reds and coppers fade fastest. Blues and greens tend to linger. Wash with cold water, use sulfate-free shampoo, and minimize washing frequency to extend the life of Pravana vivid shades.

Can you mix vivid colors to create custom shades?

Yes. Most direct dye lines can be intermixed to create custom shades. Mix colors from the same brand for best results. Use a clear mixer or conditioner to dilute the color for pastel shades. Keep notes on your formulas so you can recreate successful custom mixes for return clients.
